On 12 October, the Bureau of Geological and Mining Research (BRGM) published a new map of mineral resources in France. This one completes two previous maps, where it is learned that 4000 quarries are active in the metropolitan territory, 500 of which extract ornamental and construction rocks. It is mainly limestone (418000? M3) and marble, then granite (122400? M3) and sandstone (12900? M3). These stones are intended for construction (44%, with a turnover of 150 million euros), the funeral sector (37.3% and 128 million euros) and the road network (10%).
The sector has 770 companies for approximately 6,000 employees. A complementary map highlights the 16 active mines in December 2015. Twelve are salt mines, two (Bédarieux-L'Arboussas and Villeveyrac in the Hérault) produce bauxite, that of Echassières (Allier) tin, tantalum and niobium and Antully (Saône-et- Loire) will produce fluorite as of 2018. These maps can be downloaded from the portal www.mineralinfo.fr
